Fallen Officer Memorial

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C. to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Bryan P. Gross

On July 28, 2011, a 911 caller reported a juvenile girl struggling in the swollen North Platte River, behind the State Fair Grounds.  Despite having one minute remaining in his shift, Deputy Gross responded and without hesitation dove into the river after furiously stripping off his boots and uniform.  In reaching the girl, bystanders saw Bryan “throw the girl out of the water towards the bank.”  In the ensuing confusion, Bryan was gone.  The girl was rescued downstream by other emergency responders and civilians.
The body of Deputy Gross was located after an extensive 2 1/2 day search, several miles downstream. Hundreds of community members, volunteers and emergency responders participated in this search.
