Fallen Officer Memorial

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C. to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Ryan F. Weltman

Ryan Weltman, age 22, died on July 3, 1994, as a result of a sea kayaking accident on Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone National Park. Ranger Weltman was conducting a public safety patrol of the wilderness lake to contact canoeists and campers on an afternoon when high winds were creating rough seas. He apparently capsized the kayak while crossing a portion of the lake known as the Narrows, suffered hypothermia from prolonged exposure to the cold lake water, and drowned.
