
Fallen Officer Memorial
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C. to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

On December 20, 1983, Officer Hardy responded to a dispatch of a residential burglary in process. After checking out the residence, Officer Hardy started to return to his vehicle when he was shot and killed from ambush by Dale Chamberlain. Chamberlain later died as a result of fragments from exploding pipe bombs he had set off.

Deputy Schulte was killed July 7, 1983, when his patrol vehicle was hit head-on by another vehicle. The vehicle that struck Deputy Schulte’s vehicle was attempting to pass a third vehicle on a county road hillcrest.

Patrolman Chris Logsdon died on October 13, 1998, in a fatal car crash while responding to a report of a possibly intoxicated driver traveling south in the northbound lane on Interstate 25 approximately 10 miles north of Wheatland. As Patrolman Logsdon has heading southbound, the suspect driver was now traveling northbound on the southbound side, in the passing lane. As Patrolman Logsdon topped a hill, he was confronted with the suspect driver and swerved his vehicle sharply to the right, where his vehicle flipped and rolled. The driver of the suspect vehicle was apprehended a short time later.

Robert A. VanAlyne Jr.
On August 1, 1985, during a flood in Cheyenne, Deputy VanAlyne was attempting to rescue four people stranded on the rooftop of a car. During the rescue attempt, Deputy VanAlyne and a six year old girl were washed away in the current and both drowned.
