
Fallen Officer Memorial
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C. to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Jack N. Jernigan
On March 4, 1954, Officer Jernigan and two Air Force Policemen answered a disturbance call at a local restaurant. A suspect in the disturbance pulled a semi-automatic handgun and attempted to take the officers’ weapons. Officer Jernigan pushed the Air Policemen to the floor, withdrew his weapon and fired several shots. The suspect also fired his weapon. Both Officer Jernigan and the suspect were killed in the exchange of gunfire.

Nobert E. Tuck
Sheriff Tuck was killed February 15, 1961, when his car was struck by a freight train on the western city limits of Toledo, Ohio. He had gone to Toledo to transport a prisoner back to Wyoming on a non-support charge. Authorities believed that Sheriff Tuck saw the flashing train crossing signals too late, since his car left 200 feet of skid marks on Highway 30, eventually coming to rest broadside on the railroad tracks.

Edwards Phillips
On March 5, 1955, Deputy Phillips died from a gun shot wound he had received on March 4, 1955, from fugitive Charles Billings. Deputy Phillips was conducting a search for Billings in the Green River railroad yards at the time of the shooting. Billings had been involved earlier in another homicide. Billings was shot and killed later the same day by a Union Pacific Special Agent.

Charles E. Calvert
Warden Charles Calvert died on January 26, 1965. Warden Calvert was assisting other game wardens in moving a herd of elk in the East Fork of the Wind River, northeast of Dubois, Wyoming. While attempting to start his snow machine Warden Calvert died of a sudden heart attack.
