Fallen Officer Memorial

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C. to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Wyoming Game & Fish

Don Simpson

On October 31, 1945, Deputy Warden Don Simpson, along with Deputy Warden Bill Lakanen, was found shot to death in the Sierra Madre Mountains southwest of Rawlins. Warden Simpson was investigating illegal beaver trapping in the area at the time of the shooting. The suspect in the double homicide, John Malten, was never apprehended. It is believed Malten burned to death in a cabin fire at the crime scene.

Glenrock Town Marshal

Clifford E. Smith

Marshal Smith was killed on August 10, 1946, while directing traffic at Fifth and Birch Streets in Glenrock, Wyoming. The seventeen year old driver who hit Smith was blinded by the headlights of a stream of oncoming vehicles which had just left a dance. Marshal Smith had been a town marshal for just one week.

Bill Lakanen

Powell Police Department

Anthony Bernard Nelson

Acting Chief Anthony “Tony” Nelson died October 29, 1950. Chief Nelson was responding to a disturbance call with two other officers when he suffered a fatal heart attack. After collapsing, the officers attempted to drive him to Powell Memorial Hospital, however Chief Nelson died while en route.
