4/20/2020: WLEA Advanced Training Update

Dear Administrators,

As you are aware, WLEA has made several changes in the way we are doing business during this pandemic response and social distancing. These changes were made to ensure that we are continuing with our mission of training Wyoming's Peace and Detention Officers. We have been moving much of our Basic Course classroom/lecture content to an online, remote learning model.

With so much focus on new officers and completion of Basic, the advanced training team wanted to let you know about their efforts toward the continuation of training to go beyond Basic. While we currently can't hold any advanced training on campus, we are offering resources for veteran officers to receive POST-certified training hours. We understand that it isn't the same as attending class and interacting with fellow officers from around the state, but adaptation and adjustment is necessary during this time.  With these resources, officers can train around their schedule, or an entire shift can participate in roll call training. Online training can help ensure that an officer or deputy does not have a lapse in certification because they couldn't physically attend a training.

All of these resources are found on the WLEA's updated website. We have put together a small clearinghouse of information that encompasses 8 WLEA "refresher" courses as well as several legitimate outside sources. At this time, the 8 WLEA classes are free of charge; but you must still follow the registration process. There are a few sources that require payment, but many are free of charge as well. We have also verified with POST that the hours will be accepted, as long as a submission for credit is completed per the listed instructions.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact either Advanced Training Supervisor Justin Smith ( or Advanced Training Coordinator Tom Sweet ( or by calling the Academy at 307-358-3617.  If you have suggestions you'd like to share for other sources of COVID training beneficial for Law Enforcement or other online law enforcement training courses, please let us know, and we'll add them to our clearing-house listing.

As discussed in our previous announcements and e-mails, we have been continuously evaluating the health risks associated with continuing Basic Training given the current circumstance. After receiving a newer recommendation from the Department of Health to eliminate various aspects of training that are unfortunately needed at this point in the A Basic, the Attorney General has approved the recommendation that the Academy suspend the current on-site basic training classes for the immediate future.

Administrators who have students in those basic classes have already received correspondence detailing the particular processes involved with their students.

We do not currently know how long this "pause" will be and therefore cannot make predictions regarding future basics. We are however working diligently to explore a variety of delivery methods as potential contingencies in the event the circumstance begins to impact the B Basic.

We will keep you up to date as we learn more. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Below is the information that was sent out via email to all agency heads in Wyoming. Please read through the letter for further information.

After reading, if you have questions, contact WLEA during business hours at 307.358.3617.

We have been in regular consultation with the Attorney General's Office regarding the current and future impact of COVID-19 on the operations of the Academy since last week. As this circumstance evolves we have discussed multiple contingencies in an effort to continue ensuring the health and safety of your officers while they are here.

As we work to find and implement both short and longer term solutions, several community governments within the state have implemented travel restriction policies in an effort to protect their employees. This has necessitated cancellations of both Advanced students as well as guest instructors.

As a result, to both ensure safety as well as maintain viable class sizes, all Advanced Training and Facility Usages at the Academy from today through April 30th will be suspended and rescheduled. As this circumstance continues to develop we will provide updates regarding the potential re-scheduling of any Advanced Training classes beyond April 30th.

We are still currently evaluating risk and contingencies regarding Basic Training. Understanding the direct impact that scheduling changes to Basic Training has on agencies, we will provide any information we have regarding Basic Training if any such changes become necessary. We have already implemented additional internal protocols to ensure the health and safety of basic students and staff who are currently here while we train.
