
The annual Wyoming Peace Officer Memorial will be held Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy at 11:00 a.m.
Three officers will be honored during the 2010 Memorial Service.
Charles S. Gunn
Laramie County, Wyoming Territory, Lusk Wyoming
Town Constable Charles S. Gunn died on January 15, 1887. As he entered the Waters Saloon, in Lusk WY, he was shot by Bill McCoy in the abdomen. Constable Gunn fell to his knees and dropped his revolver. Constable Gunn retrieved his weapon and when attempting to stand, McCoy shot him again, in the head, at point blank range killing him instantly. McCoy was apprehended, convicted of first degree murder, and sentenced to hang, but escaped from jail, never to be found.
C. Henry Edwards Jr.
Cheyenne Police Department
Officer Edwards died January 23, 1907. Officer Edwards was stabbed in the chest with a large knife while attempting to apprehend a suspect. After Officer Edwards fell to the ground, he attempted to shoot the fleeing suspect but missed. Officer Edwards, got up and continued pursuing the suspect apprehending him. Officer Edwards died from his injuries two days later. Before his death, Officer Edwards told his father, “I did my duty and captured my man, and now am not afraid to die.”
John Alderdice
Greybull Police Department
Officer Alderdice died February 21, 1945. Officer Alderdice responded to a disturbance at Byrd Apartments in Greybull. A struggle ensued with the suspect, and Officer Alderdice was thrown down a set of stairs suffering multiple jaw fractures, a skull fracture and internal injuries. Officer Alderdice insisted he was not badly hurt was escorted home by a caring citizen, where he received medical attention. Officer Alderdice died from his injuries the next day. The suspect plead guilty and was sentenced to 18-20 years.
Anthony Bernard Nelson
Powell Police Department
Acting Chief Anthony "Tony" Nelson died on October 29, 1950. Chief Nelson was responding to a disturbing call with two other officers when he suffered a fatal heart attack. After collapsing, the officers attempted to drive him to the Powell Memorial hospital, however Chief Nelson died while en route.
