OFFICER: BILL LAKANEN        

DEPARTMENT: Wyoming Game and Fish Department

DATE OF INCIDENT: October 31, 1945 

DETAILS: Deputy Game Warden Bill Lakanen was found shot to death along with Deputy Game Warden Don Simpson in the Sierra Madre Mountains, southwest of Rawlins.  Warden Lakanen was investigating illegal beaver trapping in the area at the time of the shooting.  The suspect in the double homicide, John Malten was never apprehended.  It is believed Malten burned to death in a cabin fire at the crime scene.
