DEPARTMENT:  Laramie County, Wyoming Territory, Lusk, Wyoming

DATE OF INCIDENT:  January 15, 1887

DETAILS:  Town Constable Charles S. Gunn died on January 15, 1887. As he entered the Waters Saloon, in Lusk WY, he was shot by Bill McCoy in the abdomen. Constable Gunn fell to his knees and dropped his revolver. Constable Gunn retrieved his weapon and when attempting to stand, McCoy shot him again, in the head, at point blank range killing him instantly. McCoy was apprehended, convicted of first degree murder, and sentenced to hang, but escaped from jail, never to be found.
