APPLICATION GUIDELINES

College Credit  |  Modular Training | Application Forms

Applicant Requirements - Applicants accepted by the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy are required to abide by all rules and regulations pertaining to classroom and dormitory conduct as specified in the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy's RULES AND REGULATIONS.

Application Procedures - Walk-in registration will not be accepted. Application for enrollment in all Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy schools must be submitted on the appropriate official application form(s) . Each course description specifies the required form for that course. All applications must be received at the Academy by the published deadline.

NOTE: When submitting applications for the Peace Officer Basic Course, please keep the following considerations in mind:

1. All applications are processed on a first come - first served basis (based on the date of receipt at the Academy) and are automatically prioritized in the following order:

a. Peace Officers (assigned to street enforcement duties)

b. Detention Officers

c. Others (records clerks, dispatchers, animal control officers, etc.)

2. Applications which are rejected because of an overflow in a previous Basic are automatically given top priority consideration for the next Basic (no additional paperwork is required).

3. Any applications which should be considered apart from the above priority guidelines because of special or exceptional circumstances must be accompanied by a letter or memo from the agency administrator, addressed to the Academy Director, explaining the reason(s) for the special consideration. Some examples of reasons for special requests are:

a. Officers whose one year grace period for attendance in the Basic Course is about to expire.

b. Officers who would receive additional pay upon completion of the Basic Course.

c. Departments that have an established policy which does not permit officers to work the streets until they have completed the Basic Course.

d. Illness or special scheduling considerations.

4. The Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy cannot admit, or consider any applicant for admission, who has not been issued a temporary P.O.S.T. certification number prior to application. This number must be noted at the appropriate place on the application form.

Confirmations - The Academy will send notices to the administrators of those officers who have been confirmed to attend classes on the dates published in this training schedule. These confirmation forms will include special instructions for the students. An applicant is not accepted into the school by the Academy unless and until officially confirmed in writing.

Restrictions - Due to the nature of some of the training offered and the budgetary guidelines placed on the Academy by the legislature, enrollment in a school may be limited and some of the applications may not be confirmed. Special circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis and requests must be relayed to the Academy Director by the applicant's administrator on the department's letterhead.

Registration Fees - The registration fee for each course is published with the course description. This fee reflects room and board costs and, in the case of some schools, additional fees to help cover the expenses of instructional or supply costs which are beyond the limitations of the Academy's budget. Departments will be billed on a monthly basis for all training services provided. This billing notice will list and itemize all information relative to the date and title of courses, officers attending, and costs. THE ACADEMY CANNOT CHARGE PARTIAL TUITION OR REFUND UNUSED TUITION. ONCE A STUDENT HAS OFFICIALLY REGISTERED AT THE BEGINNING OF A SCHOOL, THE SPONSORING AGENCY IS OBLIGATED TO PAY AND WILL BE BILLED FOR THE FULL AMOUNT OF THE ADVERTISED COURSE TUITION, WHETHER OR NOT THE STUDENT ACTUALLY ATTENDS THE ENTIRE COURSE.

COLLEGE CREDITS

Eastern Wyoming College, in cooperation with the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy , offers college credits for basic and a limited number of advanced or specialized courses. Information will be given at the start of each class regarding credit through Eastern Wyoming College.

These credits are applicable to associate and baccalaureate degrees. They may be transferred to other institutions upon written request to Eastern Wyoming College.

Please contact the receptionist at the Academy, 358-3617, if you have any questions. (Top)

MODULAR TRAINING

The Academy recognizes the need for agencies to provide their personnel with opportunities for remedial, refresher, or pre-service training. Therefore, upon written application, a member of a law enforcement or related agency, or qualified civilians may attend specific sections or classes within the basic training courses. Please refer to the course descriptions for a detailed listing of classes.

These applications will be handled on a case by case basis. Acceptance or rejection will be made on the basis of: (1) the stated need for the training; (2) a consideration of the nature of the requested training in relation to the need; and (3) the Academy's ability to meet the demands of additional students within the requested time frame.

Applications on behalf of law enforcement officers and law enforcement civilian personnel must be submitted on the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy Modular Training Application (MT-1) and must be signed by an authorized administrator.

Applications submitted by civilians not connected with law enforcement or a governmental agency must also include a letter of recommendation from an administrator of a legitimate agency stating the anticipated use and benefit of the requested training to the agency, and the agency's commitment to sponsor (accept all responsibility for and cover the cost of) the applicant for training.

All inquiries and applications must be directed to the Academy Registrar. Applications will be accepted no later than six (6) weeks prior to the requested training. (Top)
